As we, in the southern hemisphere, look forward to our well-earned summer holiday and, we have some downtime from our frenetic and fast-paced daily lives, it is typically a good time to reflect. Are we in the right job? Will my current role serve me to build my career? As a general rule, we find that candidates who take the time to drive their careers with an intentional and strategic focus are more successful and fulfilled in their respective roles.
A few tell-tale signs that may resonate with you and highlight if it may be time to move on;
- You lack passion
We probably spend the majority of our conscious life at work, it is exceptionally difficult for a person to be successful in a role if there is little passion for the job. Human beings need to feel fulfilled and a sense of meaning in their roles. If you are not waking up most mornings with a feeling of excitement towards your job, it is a problem and probably not sustainable. Do you get a horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach on Sunday night thinking of another Monday morning at the office? Just doing a “job” becomes a mindless grind, whilst passion drives creativity, productivity and success. Where are you on the mindless grind and passion continuum?
- Hit the ceiling
You feel that you are bored and stagnating in your job. You have been at your present company for a number of years and feel that there are no other compelling roles that interest you. You have had discussions with your manager regarding expanding your portfolio or role with no positive prospects.
Money shouldn’t be the overriding reason to change jobs, have the courage to address it before thinking of leaving. Find out market related salaries for your role and check which salary quartile you are on. If you still feel that you are behind the curve, have an honest and frank conversation with your manager.
- Company Prospects
The economy is tough, is your company missing their revenue targets or, even worse, losing money? It is always better to get another job while your company is still solvent. If you suspect that the business is on a downward slide, it is certainly a good time to consider moving on.
- Corporate Culture
You feel that there are ethical or moral differences in how the company operates. Your personal values are simply not aligned with the company’s. Whatever the issue may be, if you’re morally misaligned with your employer and it is an uncomfortable workplace setting, it is probably time consider your next move.
- Your skills are not being tapped
Management doesn’t acknowledge that you have more to offer than what you have been contributing for a significant amount of time. You have been passed over for promotion a number of times. You are not considered for exciting projects or strategic assignments.
If you identify with one or more of the above, it may be time to consider moving on.
